Over the winter, many computers came to us that were infected with various trojans, malware, spyware and adware. Some of the signs are sluggishness, unable to connect to the internet, and freeze-ups. We have also received many complaints about spam. We filter as much as we can. Spammers have gotten better at hiding from filters. Here is a treatise on spam and its prevention. The single most effective way spam propagates is by landing in a mailbox that has the reading pane or preview pane turned on. When that message is highlighted before deleting, it can send a response to the sender that it has found a a valid email, which is then quickly sold and resold and resold to the spammers network. Check the help file in your email program to find out how to turn off the reading or preview pane.
